  • Henry Lo's Biography

    Henry Lo has been an involved member of the Rosemead community for many years and has dedicated his to time in service to the community. In November of 2007, Henry Lo was overwhelmingly re-elected to the Garvey School District Board of Education, the second oldest school district in Los Angeles County and located within the communities of Rosemead, Monterey Park, San Gabriel and South San Gabriel. Henry was first elected to Garvey School District Board of Education in November of 2003.

    Henry is currently serving as the President of the Board and has previously held the leadership positions of President, Vice President and Clerk during his term. He has also served twice as the Board's Liaison to Garvey's Head Start Parent Policy Committee.

    Henry has worked hard in cooperation with the Garvey School District's Teachers, Classified employees, Administrators, and Parents to improve test scores and after-school programming. Since 2003, Garvey's schools have been recognized by national and state programs such as Title 1, National Blue Ribbon and California Distinguished School. In addition the district has been successful in expanding after-school programs from one campus to all 13 of its campuses that serves 1000 students.

    A believer in building coalitions, Henry has worked tirelessly to forge partnerships within the community and at all levels of government from local city councils to our state and congressional representatives on all matters of public education. In 2006, the Garvey School District became partners with the Los Angeles Community College District to transform one of Garvey's schools, Williams Elementary, to a college satellite campus. Currently, the Garvey School District is partnering with the City of Rosemead and the West San Gabriel Valley Boys and Girls Club to transform Duff Elementary to a community youth services and education center. In addition, the school district is laying the foundations with local agencies to converse water resources.

    Henry is a founding member of the Garvey Education Foundation, a nonprofit organization created to build community support for the school district's academic and extracurricular programs. Since its founding in 2005, the foundation has raised over $40,000. Henry also played an instrumental role in creating the largest modernization program in the history of the Garvey School District when voters passed Measure Q, a $30 million bond.

    Henry has been a legislative staffer and community representative for State Senator Gloria Romero for ten years. Between 2005 and 2007, Henry was a consultant for the Senate Select Committee on Asian/Pacific Trade, Commerce and Culture and helped to successfully enact trade legislation for the State of California. As community representative, Henry has represented the Senator as liaison in the communities of Los Angeles and the San Gabriel Valley and in the issue areas of the Environment, Education, Transportation, Asian-American Affairs, and Local Government.

    Henry is a second-generation Californian and the son of immigrants. Henry believes that it is the role of our public schools to provide quality education to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to reach the American Dream. He obtained a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Government and East Asian Studies from Colby College located in the state of Maine.
